Welcome to the BSC coaching curriculum

Byte Size Coaching can give coaches the tools they need to succeed.

On behalf of the Nanaimo Youth Soccer Club, welcome to Byte Size coaching. NYSC partnered with Byte Size coaching and former Canadian Head Coach, Tony Waiters, to bring you this program for the upcoming season.

The technical department recognizes that as a coach you have limited time and resources to accomplish everything you want to accomplish in a week. This resource is designed to help you create effective, practices in a small amount of time.

To access this site, please contact your age group coordinator and they will provide you a login and password to get you stared. If you have any troubles accessing the site or navigating your way around, please contact the Soccer Office at 729-9400.

Inside the club we recognize that not everyone has played soccer before or knows how to coach, but you want to make a difference. This tool will help set you on the path to accomplishing this. With this resource you can know download, print and take the plan to the field with you. This information will help to make your practices flow.

If you have an assistant coach or parents helping out, make sure you break some of these games and line ups down to smaller groups so the kids are not standing around waiting. Remember, everyone wants to be playing, so let’s make sure the activity has everyone involved and not just waiting for their turn.

When using these practice plans don’t be afraid of inserting your own ideas to make the games and activities more fun, more difficult, or simpler depending on the progress of your players. Use your imagination, be creative, design your own games or practice using these plans as a foundation.

Feel free to explore practice plans of older and younger age groups to build your base of ideas. Even professional teams still perform some of the practices found in the U7 plans because they are simple and provide a change of pace from the more complicated activities. This keeps the training environment in a state of constant change and that in turn, keeps players tuned in.

We have now added to the original program by including Lesson Plans for Indoor practice. We have assumed that most of these take place in a relatively small school gymnasium and have scaled things accordingly.

We have also added over 200 single pages of soccer activities that will provide fun for the whole of the family around the kitchen table or in the backyard with a soccer ball. We are just re-organizing the presentation of these Activity pages so feel free to scroll through them.

Last year we added a Resource Library for the coaches of U13 – U18 players. The Resource Library is presented differently than the U7 – U12 Lesson Plans in that we are presuming that, to a certain extent, the coach is basing practice on Team Performance in 11 vs. 11 games.

We also added the U4 – U6 program which we have presented more as a soccer-themed, non-competitive introduction to the game of soccer. However, some organizations begin with a more formal U6 program and have therefore, used the U7 Practice Plans as the starting place.

These plans cover all aspects of the fundamentals of the game and should provide you with a good base of ideas to work from. They should help you in your preparation for your team’s practices and consequently play a positive role in your team’s preparation for games. However, we hope the Byte Size Coaching program goes even farther than that and facilitates the development of your own ideas and training methods.

On behalf of the Technical Department and NYSC Executive

Have a great season and have fun!
